Holly Thompson on the King's Castle Trail

Smooth, single-track gradually climbs through thick old growth to a beautiful view of Mt. Washintong and the Sisters after several tight switchbacks.

  • Drive east on Hwy 126 past Blue River (1 hour)
  • Go past the Cougar Reservoir Junction and take the next right on McKenzie River Dr.
  • Continue through Rainbow and take a right through the covered bridge.
  • Turn Left on Horse Creek Rd.
  • Look for the trailhead parking lot on the right side of the road 1/4 mile east of the bridge.
  • On the way home be sure to stop at Mom's pies for some post ride pie!

The trail begins by climbing gradually through mature stands of Douglas-fir. After about 3 miles the trail enters a clear-cut with views of the Husband and Sisters. The route continues by following the dirt road on the opposite side of the clear cut. After .7 miles at the junction with Road #480, pick up the trail on the opposite side of #480 slightly uphill from the junction. Continuing upward, the trail then dips after .5 miles and intersects with the Olallie Trail. Continue right, uphill through some tight switchbacks and dense second-growth. The Castle Rock Trail begins at the end of Road #480 and leads to the summit of Castle Rock after about 1 mile. Descend the same route; be careful not to accidentally descend don the Olallie trail.
Alternate: Avoid climbing some of the tight switchbacks by riding up Road #480 to its end and pick up the Castle Rock Trail to the summit.
