Jay Gress on the Larison Creek Trail
Jersey by Pearl Izumi
Helmet by Giro
Pack by TrueNorth
This route can be ridden as a gravel road climb with a single-track descent or out and back on the trail. Either way the narrow, twisty route will challenge your bike handling skills. Beautiful, lush forest makes this trail a great hike too.

  • Out of Eugene, follow Hwy 58 to Oakridge (45min).
  • Drive through Oakridge at a speed of no greater than 35 mph (unless you want to end up on the wrong side of the law).
  • Stop for coffee at Diamond Peak Drive Thru Coffee Stand.
  • Continue on past Dink's Market, then turn right on to Kitson Springs Rd.
  • Drive a short 1/4 mile then take another right following USFS road #21 along the west shore of Hills Creek Reservoir.
  • After about 4 miles look for the trailhead and a parking lot on your right.
  • Total time to trailhead: 1 hour

The beginning (and ending of the ride) consists of smooth, fast single track along Larison Cove. Look our for some exposed slopes particularly when the reservoir is drawn down. As you go further following Larison Creek, the trail becomes increasingly difficult. Numerous ups and downs studded with rocks and tree roots force you to be on your toes. After about 4 miles you'll come to a slippery log crossing over the rocky creek, beyond that the trail ascends several steep, tight switchbacks; then climbs through dense second growth before ending at USFS road #101. Descend back the same way. The descent will probably take 1/3 of the time that the climb did.
To climb a gravel road to reach the upper trailhead, ride out of the parking lot back down USFS road #21 (north). After about 2 miles, turn left onto road #2102. Approximately 1.5 miles later, take the left fork onto road #101. Continue climbing about another 8 miles; look for the trailhead on yo
ur left.
