Although the route is fairly well marked, a good map an map
reading skills will help you stay on track. Check out the
Singletrack Anthology - Central Oregon Ride Guide;
an excellent resource for rides just east of the mountains.
Starting out on flat terrain,
the trail begins a gradual ascent just beyond Squaw Creek
Canal after about 2.5 miles. The only climb on the route comes
around mile post 5.5 and is just tall enought to get you on
the Peterson Ridge. The ridge's steep, rocky northwest side
offers some spectacular views of the Three Sisters if you're
willing to walk 1/4 mile off the trail. The best views are
found around mile mark 7.5, just as the trail loops around
on itself. The descent back can be really fast, so watch your
speed on the corners and be mindful of other trail users.
Tip: Avoid the mid-day heat and dry, dusty days! |
