Janae March and Neils Dammen on the Peteson Ridge

Winding through juniper, silver sage and stands of Ponderosa pine. This gentle climb is a great introduction to mountain biking for the novice. Smooth, fast turns make it a favorite of expert riders too.

  • From Eugene, Drive East over the Santiam Pass on Hwy 126.
  • Once in Sisters, go directly to the Sisters Bakery for a maple bar and a cup of coffee.
  • Park in Sisters - The park on East Elm St. is a good place to leave your car and use the restrooms.
  • From Sisters, ride south on East Elm st. which will become USFS road #16.
  • Ride about 1/2 mile to the junctions of road #16 and Tyee Dr.

Although the route is fairly well marked, a good map an map reading skills will help you stay on track. Check out the Singletrack Anthology - Central Oregon Ride Guide; an excellent resource for rides just east of the mountains.
Starting out on flat terrain, the trail begins a gradual ascent just beyond Squaw Creek Canal after about 2.5 miles. The only climb on the route comes around mile post 5.5 and is just tall enought to get you on the Peterson Ridge. The ridge's steep, rocky northwest side offers some spectacular views of the Three Sisters if you're willing to walk 1/4 mile off the trail. The best views are found around mile mark 7.5, just as the trail loops around on itself. The descent back can be really fast, so watch your speed on the corners and be mindful of other trail users.
Tip: Avoid the mid-day heat and dry, dusty days!
