Paul's Cycling Team - 2006
Brian Vollmer-Buhl
I have 32 years of existence on this earth and look forward
to many more. I have been biking for 26 1⁄2 years and
enjoyed every moment of it. Except when I skinned both knees,
elbows, and 8 out of 10 knuckles in a wicked crash that was
the result of too much sugar cereal and lack of parental input
on the height of a plywood jump that was poorly positioned
in the middle of the street, at age 9. I’m a quick learner
and as long as the skin loss does not extend to more then
2 out of 4 limbs, I consider it a good day.

I started riding at a young age in Michigan where I grew up.
My first ride was a dirt bike with a banana seat. As a young
teen I purchased my first 10 speed. I further honed my cycling
skills by delivering newspapers on the bike. Try turning around
on an ice-sheathed driveway one-handed because you’re
throwing a newspaper at the door and there is a 40-pound sack
slung over one shoulder. I learned to crash, but I learned
to crash well!
Last bicycling season I competed in over 30 races. I started
off the season in Cat 4 and upgraded mid-summer to Cat 3.
I finished 5th in the High Desert Road Race outside of Bend,
and 3rd in the Eugene Celebration Road Race. I plan to pick
up where I left off for the 2006 race season.

Until my career as a Hollywood stunt man takes off, I’m
a science teacher for grades 7-12 in a local rural school
district. It’s a job I love. During the summer besides
riding lots, I teach summer school for the elementary school.
Besides cycling I enjoy cooking which goes hand-in-hand with
my second pleasure which is eating. Cycling lends itself well
to one of my other favorite past times, which is reading.
My genre of choice is non-fiction. I also enjoy non-bike activities
like camping and canoeing. I’m currently enriching the
right side of my brain through my art. I create monsters out
of old plastic milk jugs. Look for them in a gallery near
you!
