GEARS AND EUGENE BICYCLE COALITION MERGE
Eugene's leading bicycle club, GEARS, has merged with our local bicycle advocacy group formerly known as the Eugene Bicycle Coalition. This is my opinion is a good move.
Many serious riders are also passionate advocates. It makes sense that cyclists who are primarily interested in rides and other organized bicycling events should also be kept in the loop about opportunities to advocate for more support for bicycling in the community (and vice versa).
Please join up and put your shoulder to the important business of making Eugene a still nicer community with better facilities for cycling and more cycling events. You can join up by contacting Mel Huey at mel97402@gmail.com. Or you can just visit their web page at www.eugenegears.org and find out all about it.
CAR - CYCLIST FATAL COLLISION
David matthew Minor was tragically killed in a collision with a car on June 2. According to police, Minor was headed North on Willamette attempting a left turn while the driver was proceeding south. Minor was not wearing an helmet.
This tragedy brings in mind how important it is to wear a helmet whenever riding a bicycle, and to ride safely and defensively.
No doubt this event is a terrible thing for the driver too. While I would not presume to comment on this particular accident which I did not witness, I think it is appropriate to note that cyclists and pedestrians are exceptionally vulnerable when among 3000 pound vehicles. It is important that everyone on the road take responsibility for avoiding tragic outcomes like this. Cyclists and pedestrians should ride safely to foster a cooperative attitude among users of the streets, and drivers should always be aware of how devastating a collision between a bike or pedestrian and a car can be.
